This is a model 21J Ships Chronometer made for the U. Navy by the Elgin National Watch Company of Elgin, Illinois. Elgin produced these from 1907 through 1919. All of the numbers on the face are in Arabic and it has a 40 hour wind indicator.

Please note the serial numbers on the box exterior of the chronometer, U. These units are rare to find with this marking intact.

The USSB was established by Congress in 1916 to address concerns over maritime shortcomings. The chronometer has a 2 diameter face, brass case, gimbals and fittings, and three-tier mahogany box.

5 1/ 4 H x 5 1/8 W x 5 1/8 D. The top tier uses a button latch while the middle tier has a key lock.

I do not have the key. The chronometer is in fine running order. However, I will always give this word of advice.

I do not wind my chronometers. So, if you plan to wind it, take it in for a service first. It was last cleaned and regulated in August 2009. This box is in wonderful condition and the flaws in the box are clearly visible in the photos. It actually shows nicer without the flash of the camera.

Really a wonderful piece with the box in exactly the condition you would expect from a WWI Chronometer. Some boxes I pass on because of condition. This box was beautiful with the slight wear and I believe you will think the same. Everything is in good condition.

This chronometer was used right up to the Korean War. The item "Elgin Ship's Chronometer in Gimbaled Mahogany Box, WWI very rare" is in sale since Tuesday, April 19, 2016.
