Nico Jungmann (1872-1935) Important World War I Oil Ruhleben Prison Camp Showers

RECENTLY DISCOVERED - STAMPED WITH CAMP SENSORS MARK. A VERY important tempera work by Nico Wilhelm Jungmann depicting men showering in the shower block at Ruhleben Concentration Camp in 1917. Jungmann painted a number of views of the camp - one of which is in the Imperial War Museum - and is also tempera on paper and also stamped with the camp sensors mark. We discovered this painting in a garage in Gloucestershire - the owner was uncertain of what he had until after our reserach. We are offering it for sale online on behalf of the vendor.

These works of Ruhleben are incredibly rare and highly sought after, espeically by Jungmann - the painting in itself is beautiful and a real piece of history. This should really be in a museum. Title: Men Showering - Ruhleben POW Camp 1917. Signature: Stamped with the Camp Sensor mark lower centre. Medium: Tempera on paper laid on panel.

Provenance: Private collection - London. 29 x 24 inches unframed / 30 x 25 framed. Condition: Generally very good for age - a few small marks. Jungmann was born in Amsterdam, where he was apprenticed to a church painter, and studied at the Rijksakademie. He came to London about 1893 on a scholarship and became a naturalized British subject, returning to the Netherlands frequently, to paint in Volendam.

As a naturalised Briton, he was interned by German forces during the First World War, which led eventually to the break-up of his marriage. Jungmann made several painting excursions to Brittany and Holland with his friend and fellow-painter Charles W. He illustrated topographical books on Holland (1904) and Norway (1905) for which his wife Beatrix wrote the text, as well as one on Normandy (1905) with a text by Geraldine Edith Mitton. He died, aged 63, in London.
