Offered is an original WW1 Death Plaque, awarded to the family of Lionel Newton Savage, who served with the 44th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces. SAVAGE Lionel Newton : Service Number - 971 : Place of Birth - Hendon England : Place of Enlistment - Perth WA 13th December 1915. Occupation: Electrician: Next of Kin - (Father) SAVAGE Thomas Lionel.

Buried Etaples Military Cemetery, 12th February 1918. 971 Signalman Savage, trained as a signaller (his Electrician trade would be the reason he would have been allotted as a sig).

He sailed from Fremantle 6th June 1916 to England, then to France. He is listed as Wounded 18th October 1917, with a compound fracture to the base of the skull, most likely as a result of a collapse H.

Dugout, with wooden beam etc falling in on him. He arrived at the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on the 24th October, dying on the 28th (10 days from his initial injury) at the 7th Canadian General Hospital. In late October 1917, the 44th Battalion fought around Broodenseinde Ridge, where it suffered heavily out of 992 men committed, only 158 finished the battle uninjured. The round bronze Memorial Plaque is 120mm in diameter. It shows Britannia and a lion on the front and bears the inscription: "He died for freedom and honour".

The full name of the dead soldier is engraved on the right hand side of the plaque. No rank, unit or decorations are shown, befitting the equality of the sacrifice made by all casualties. The shape and appearance of the plaque earned it nicknames such as the "Dead Man's Penny", the "Death Penny", and the "Widow's Penny".
