A scarce and historically significant Royal Flying Corps grouping belonging to a Canadian, Private George Alexander Forbes. George Alexander Forbes, known as Alex, was drafted into the 1st Depot Battalion of the Western Ontario Regiment on April 26th 1918 in London, Ontario. His address was listed as Hespeler, Ontario and his religion Presbyterian. The son of George Duthie Forbes and Amy Victoria Ellis, Alex was born on the familys Hespeler estate on January 2nd 1897. He was educated at Hespeler Public School and Ridley College in St. The Forbes family, of Scottish descent, was one of Hespelers most eminent. George Duthie built the family business into the largest textile mill in the country and became the towns first elected mayor. On January 19th 1922, he married Millicent Lyall Buck of Brantford. Forbes is best remembered as a conservationist. He established a waterfowl sanctuary on the former family farm and devised a nesting box which brought the wood duck back from endangerment. He is listed in the Cambridge Hall of Fame. His family, including George Alexander Forbes, have made an important impact on the history of southern Ontario. Several sights, including parks and streets are named in honour of the family. This lot has plenty of research potential.

His records are in various Canadian archives, including Library and Archives (LAC) Canada. All items are in very good condition, with minor wear marks that are consistent with age. The leather is supple, and there are no repairs or moth damage. The service cap is made by Lincoln Bennet, and is of excellent quality with a liner and large silk label, complete with RFC buttons and cap badge. The sewing kit includes spare buttons, needles, thread and other sewing accessories.
