WW1 British RFC Aviators High Altitude Flying Helmet And Goggles. This is a well preserved Royal Flying Core aviation helmet made from sheep skin and brown leather. The long length of the piece indicates it was for high altitude use, perhaps a bomber or interceptor fighter. On both sides of the helmet are vent/hearing holes with a padded cylinder in front to cushion knocks and keep the goggles in place.
There are two small adjustable leather straps to ensure a draft free fit. The goggles are in a liner chocolate brown leather with an elastic strap. The glass lenses can be removed by lifting the side levers which opens the frame. We guarantee this is an original set. The flying helmet is approx. 16 inches (40.5 cm) in diameter at the base and 8.5 inches (21.5 inches) at the top and is 16.5 inches (42 cm) tall. The goggles are 9.5 inches (24 cm) across and 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall. The helmet and glasses are in very good condition for their age. The leather bears signs of wear but is still soft an the lining is very good. It has no tears or other significant damage. There is a small area of period restitching under the chin on a seam. On the left side is a small smattering of dried blood from a minor injury or nosebleed. The goggles are also in good order.
