The wonderful set recently came from a Michigan collector who owned it for decades. He acquired it directly from the family of the recipient.

I will be glad to provide further details if the new owner would like it. The previous owner had it framed in a archival matting with Uv protective glass. The aviator who received the second highest award only to the MOH, was aviator #127 James Sanford Otis of the Northern Bomb Group. His citation reads as followed.

The Navy Cross is awarded to Lieutenant j. Navy (Reserve Forces), For distinguished and heroic service as a aviator of an aeroplane in active operation cooperating with the Allied Armies on the Belgian Front during September, October and November 1918, bombing enemy bases ammunition dumps, railroad junctions ect.. Attached to the Northern Bomb Group.

The citation is in excellent condition with a bold signature of Secretary Josephus Daniels. The medals are both in excellent condition with a little fraying to the silk partial wrapped brooch Navy Cross ribbon. The Winged Victory medal has the Aviator clasp along with a Campaign star in bronze. The aviator badge is made by Noble and has almost a 100% gilding to the wings.

Overall, a beautiful, well presented US Navy Cross Grouping! Consisted of United States Navy and United States Marine Corps squadrons conducting strategic bombing of German U-boat bases along the Belgian coast during World War I. The first United States military unit sent to Europe was the First Aeronautic Detachment of seven naval officers and 122 enlisted men who arrived in France on 5 June 1917. These men became the nucleus of the United States Naval Forces in Europe. They formulated a strategic bombing plan approved by the Secretary of the Navy on 30 April 1918, but chronic difficulties in obtaining aircraft prevented establishment of an effective bombing campaign before the war ended six months later.
