The number 152 is visible on the caps of the men in the second row center. That it is the first Battalion can be seen on the banner of the men front left where it says 1 e B in the upper right corner of the banner. It was during the battle of HARTMANNSWILLERKOPF 1915 when despite relentless, bloody trench assaults over frozen trenches and jagged rocks in March 1915 that German soldiers, frustrated by the regiment's refusal to retreat under fire, began calling them the. The regiment later proudly adopted a red devil into their official insignia. In the photo there are two banners visible, a light one and a dark one.
