This holster is made for guns that use 45 Colt ammunition including the famous Colt 1911 which was what this holster likely carried. The model of this holster is a WW1 Model 1916 holster produced by the F. Hoyt Shoe Company of Manchester, New Hampshire.This holster was manufactured in early 1917 after the US entered World War l on April 16, 1917, as a part of the activation of US manufacturing for the war effort. Since the US had been practicing an isolationist policy maintaining a small unequipped military. The Hoyt shoe company was one of the many companies that fulfilled orders for the US government to equip the US military for service in Europe. The holster is made of genuine brown leather and features diagonal stitching around the holster.
The holster flap is stamped US indicating a US military contract holster and had a brass hook that would have been attached to a pistol belt of a soldier. The color of the holster has darkened over time because of grease buildup over the years but it is a dark brown leather. This M1916 holster is in very good condition, with a darkened brown color to the leather, with no major damage. All buttons are intact except one button on the back which is loose from the holster backing. Based on the condition of this holster it saw extensive military service and likely saw action during the war overseas.
This holster was likely issued to United States Army service members who were allowed sidearms. This could have been an officer, NCO, artilleryman, driver, machine gun crew member, or cavalryman who saw action in the trenches of Europe fighting the Germans. This is a great example of a World War 1 holster that fits the iconic M1911 Pistol and is must have for any World War l collection.
