There are other differences, but those are the primary ones and I have posted additional images below bearing this out. So, it anyone out there thinks the rimmed cap isn't correct for these canteens, please think again.
This is borne out by the circular striations on the top of the cap made by 100 years of the chain link rotating around the circumference of the cap. This is an ORIGINAL of one of the first pre-WWI canteens to be welded together at the Rock island Arsenal, rather than being made of "spun" aluminum, as had been the case when the M1910 canteen was first standardized. The welding of aluminum was thought infeasible when the first M1910 canteens were being manufactured, so the earlier canteens were instead made of spun aluminum and therefore seamless. I have been told by a knowledgeable collector that the lack of knurling of the cap is indicative of those canteens manufactured at Rock Island after about 1912-13.The canteen comes with a matching RIA "rimmed" eagle snap M1910 dismounted carrier. The cup is a later 1918-dated unissued Landers, Frary & Clark manufactured cup, which still has "mill scale" on the surfaces. All pieces are in very good condition, with the usual dings and dents to the canteen and minor soiling to the pea green fabric of the carrier.
The carrier appears to have once had unit stenciling on it, which was obliterated with "blanco" or paint. The snaps show no signs of separation from the canvas, as is sometimes the case.
Here's an opportunity for the advanced collector of WWI equipment to obtain a very rare and desirable canteen set, which is becoming increasingly rare today. I'm a militaria collector like you and I do this as a sideline to my own collecting. Nonetheless, I'll try to serve you in a businesslike fashion. Vendio Images: More than just a pretty image.
