1918 WIRE CUTTER CARRIER/POUCH TYPE 1 EARLY CARR SNAP WITH U. A very scarce and seldom seen WW1 set. Up for sale is a rare World War 1 1918 contract USMC Type 1 wire cutter carrier/pouch with an early-style Carr snap.
The long-time collector I bought it from identified it as USMC Depot manufactured, but there are no markings on the pouch indicating this. The early WW1 style Carr snap has the following stamp on it (see detailed photos) Carr Fast. This early production pouch is in unissued condition with light storage staining.
Wire cutters, if you want additional information. The pouch is 9 1/4 inches long, 3 inches wide. The unissued pouch comes with an obviously issued pair of M1910 insulated U. Amazingly, they still have remnants of their original vulcanized rubber insulated handles on them.
It is rare to find these with the original insulated handles because the insulation is fragile, especially after +/- 110 years. There are thousands of examples of M1910 fence cutters online that once had the handle insulation but now have none, compared to the M1910s that still retain even partial handle insulation. In addition to the insulated handles, these cutters still have one of the rubber tips on the tip of one of the handles, which were added around 1912 to protect the fragile insulation if the cutters were dropped. The cutters are marked U. ", and you can still see remnants of the number "5000V' that was stamped on the vulcanized rubber handle, see photos.This refers to the maximum voltage protection offered to the user when cutting electrified wire out in no-man's land. They are 8 1/4 inches long. Not the sort of item to have survived in large numbers, particularly if they experienced any significant use in the field.
Both the wire cutters and the pouch are very collectable and are quite difficult to find. This set is in good condition and would make a very attractive addition to your WW1 USMC and AEF display. Overall the condition is good for 110 plus year old wire cutters and pouch!
