Good condition Georgian era British Pattern 1897 infantry officer sword in the original filed leather scabbard. A typical example with large, plated steel bowl guard engraved with a honeysuckle ladder pattern. Fishskin and plated copper twist wire covering to the grip. The 39 blade is etched with royal cypher of King George V, royal crown and coat of arms. Straight single fullered blade with flat back and spear point is mostly clean and bright.
The right side of the blade has original engraved PROVED control mark which shape is typical for retailer / cutler Friedeberger of Portsea, Portsmouth. Steel hilt has some original silver finish remaining. The hilt features the Georgian cypher on the guard. Leather covered wooden grip has mostly tight wire wrap and some damage to fishskin. Complete with original leather field service scabbard.The leather is mostly soft and pliable but also frail near the throat. Length of the blade in scabbard: 103 cm (40 1/2).
