British Australian WW1 8173/1914 Clasp Knife with Tin Opener Gift Knife. This knife pattern knife has been referred to as the "Gift Knife" for many years.
Because they carry no Military issue marks it was. They must have been included in the Gift Tins given to the soldiers. No evidence could be found to support this belief. Have since found out that. Was one of the clasp knife patterns issued to WW1 British and Commonwealth troops and was known officially as the 8173/1914 pattern. Evidence came to hand that. High Commissioner for Australia Sir George Reid presented a pocket knife from the Commonwealth Government as a Xmas Box to each of the soldiers training in Egypt in November/December 1914.And so the Gift Knife! This knife shows some wear from sharpening but still has a pretty good profile.
The jigged bone scales are in excellent condition with no sign of chips or cracks. The jigged bone scales are that well made that they can be mistaken for Stag antler at first glance.The springs are strong and the blade snaps in to the open or closed position. The knife was made by Rawson Brothers Sheffield. The knife weighs 126 grams. The blade is 3 mm thick at the tang.
