Nearly five thousand of these scopes were supplied to British & Dominion forces during the war, making it the most commonly encountered sniper's scope. Having said that they are very scarce today, the more so with their original rings still in situ & unadulterated, This scope comes complete not only with its rings, but also with a faithful reproduction mount base for attaching the whole assembly to a suitable rifle to create a complete SMLE sniper's rifle. NB No liability is accepted for the safety of anyone choosing to do so as I have no control over their engineering skills, nor over the serviceability of any rifle used! The PPCo scope was a plagiarised & slightly modified version of the Fuess Helios 3. The main difference was the addition of the two external capstans for deflection adjustment.
This particular scope is in excellent condition, with some fine surface patination which has been carefully cleaned off in the past, but which retains much of its original blued finish & black paint on the brass ocular & objective housings. Optically it is excellent & is quite usable. I have tried to take a photograph of the graticule, which it does indeed reveal, although I could not get the'target' in focus with my camera - but this is due to my photographic limitations - the scope itself is very clear for one of its vintage, & the range drum functions, moving the graticule up & down as one would expect. I have not tried the lateral adjustment capstans, but I have no reason to believe there is any problem with their function. They will then have a complete'kit' to assemble a faithful WW1 SMLE sniper's rifle.
Originals of these are almost completely unnobtainable, as they were all stripped down for parts in the 1920's & only a few odd examples that did not get sent back to Weedon escaped this treatment. The mount base included in this sale was copied from one of the few surviving originals, though all of these rifles were hand fitted to a degree & some hand fitting may be required to optimise the mating of the base & rings.
