Exquisite WWI Pencil Drawing Of Soldier Artist Signed Ned Steel

Exceptional Pencil Drawing Of A Very Handsome WWI Soldier Signed By The Artist Ned Steel. The talent of the artist is amazing and of professional quality! It took a lot of researching to find out who this artist may be, however, we think we have solved the mystery. We can't say for certain, but, we think this is by the artist Edmund Harrison Steel....

You are purchasing this drawing with this knowledge. What a life this artist lived!

Steel was born on 3 Sept 1883 in Philadelphia, Pa. And passed away on 23 Oct 1957. Steel and Kahanamoku remained friends for years even performing in theater shows dancing and singing.

Naval Officer of the 12th Naval Dist. After the war he continued his art work and became an accomplished Commercial Artist serving as the Art Dept.

Director for The Arrow Company we think this to be the Arrow Shirt Co. And earlier working for La Pointe Studios in Philadelphia. Steel passed away on 23 October 1957 and is buried in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA. Overall condition is very good with some rips on the edges as expected from age and use. The paper appears to be rough watercolor paper.

It's kind of rigid like a poster board. Upper Left edge has a 3-1/2 tear and a section of paper missing. Upper Middle edge has 1-1/2 tear. Middle Right Edge has a 3/4 tear. Upper Middle and Upper Right Edge have small pin holes.

There are no rips or tears within the drawing itself, just a few paper dents. Photos #21 and #22 were taken with a flashlight behind photo.

Photo #16, #17 are of medal, ribbon, and artist signature. To us the signature appears to say Ned Steel. Photos #9, #10, #11 were taken from the side so as to show the reflection of the heavier pencil shading. Fade marks around border of drawing from being in a frame. Bottom of drawing has what appears to be framer's notes.

(Photo #18 thru # 20). Back of drawing has masking tape where tears are located. We can't decipher what the makings are on the collar disks and the medal appears to be Sharp Shooter with a ribbon above. On Soldiers upper Right arm, it appears to have 2 or 3 Chevrons with what looks like a number above.....

However, we've looked at this for so long.... We could be seeing things. Take a look and decide for yourself. Inside (Frame Lines) approximately 16-1/2" (T) x 12-1/2" (W). Outer approximately 18" (T) x 15" (W). Please view all photos closely as they are part of the description and condition. We consider all reasonable offers.
