It has its original factory field-grey paint which is in a very fine state of preservation on the outside. Inside the paint was applied much thinner & has a very small (tiny) amount of surface rust showing through, please study pics.
The shell has no dents. The liner is in fine condition & still retains the three cushions in the leather segments. The leather is all excellent & supple with no rips. It is a size 64 shell. All the ribbons (to hold cushions in place) are present & have never been untied. This section of leather with the stamping is the only part that seems a little fragile & dry, (it has a slight break, please see pic 8). The spring clip has some field-grey paint remaining.
The stamping on the inside apron of the shell shows "ET 64", (for Eisenhuttenwerk AG, Thale Harz h). The last picture is taken from an American publication:- "Collecting The German Steel Helmets of World War 1" By Gordon I Root, & very interestingly shows inside two different visor-less M16's, (not M18's) & one with distinct Western-front camouflage, it is often stated in more recent books that only M 18's were produced ('visorless') & of the few that were made, all were intended for the Turks. It is clear to me that they were used by the Germans on the Western Front. (I have access to another example which again, has original clear typical European camouflage patterns).Picture 10 shows a period German picture of a German soldier wearing this pattern helmet. An extremely rare chance to own one of these helmets, especially in such good & complete condition. A, Canada & most of rest of planet..................
