German WWI WW1 Jager zu Pferde Pickelhaube Spike Helmet Mod 1915 DAMASCHKE 1916
Original helmet which appears to be patially restored WWI Prussian M1915 Enlisted Jaeger zu Pferde (mounted rifles) Cuirassier (removeable) spiked helmet complete and in excellent condition. This version of the classic lobstertail German Cavalry Helmet was adapted in 1915 and boasts an original blued steel skull, visor, and tail with gun metal gray steel finish trimmings. The lobster tail neck shield shows a pointed mid-point indicating Jager zu Pferde use.

Helmet is complete with full helped original enlisted liner, chinstrap, both large side cockades and Imperial Prussian wappenshield front plate. Spike is removeable and mounted on the distinctive JzP cloverleaf, or cruciform enlisted base plate. The frontplate Dragoon variant of the Prussian heraldic eagle. The helmet's blued steel finish and matte grey trim are approximately 90% intact, as are the blued cape, the green enameled visor interior, and the black enameled crown.

This helmet was manufactured in the middle of WWI and is deeply stamped in the crown with the maker's name and date: DAMASCHKE / 1916. More recently, professional restoration work looks to have included a thorough cleaning and stabilization as well as restoration of some of the parts surfaces. The original leather liner was repaired in two spots (underneath reinforcement of two drawstring holes which are now essentially invisible).

The liner also wears an intersting possibly period depot repair of another of the liner lobes. Matched pair of Prussian and National large cockades, we believe the National cockade only is original.

Black leather chinstrap looks like an excellent original, although we suppose it could be a reconstruction replacement making use of original metal parts, we don't know for sure. Chinstrap appearance nicely matches and blends with the rest of the helmet. Overall, this Jeager zu Pferde helmet looks quite correct, very clean and honest example of a scarce variety of German Imperial mounted headwear. Crafted in the last year in which these astonishingly retro Pickelhauben were made for the Kaiser's Cavalry, this piece would be an asset to any collection.
