Imperial German, WW1, Museum Quality Reproduction Schutztruppe Colonial Officers Pith Helmet. General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck led the forces in German East Africa during the Great War. His forces never exceeded 3,500 Europeans and 12,000 Askaris and porters. He tied up a British Army of 40,000 in a Guerrilla War initially which swelled to allied Armies of over 400,000 during the course of the war.

Being far away from Germany his resupply was close to non-existent and he depended on raiding enemy camps for the essentials of war. His Schutztruppe was credited as the only German Colonial Force that was not defeated during the Great War. The German Cruiser SMS Konigsberg had to be scuttled in 1915 which added a capable crew & numerous guns which were converted to artillery pieces which gave him the largest land artillery used in the East African Theater. He was awarded Germanys highest medal the Pour le Merite and was nicknamed The Lion of Africa.

His book My Reminisences of Africa makes for interesting reading on a little noted theater of WW1.
