This is an original, 1918-dated British WWI spade / shovel / pick head for the entrenching tool. The item is mint, unissued and unused, new old stock. The side of the underside of the head of the shovel is stamped with J.
" Near this is the British War Department broad arrow proof stamp, along with the number "71. The shovel head consists of one end with a triangular spade head, the opposite end with a flat-edged pick. There is a socket for a shovel handle or helve in between. The spade head is in mint, unissued condition, showing only slight marks from long-term storage. The shovel is a blackened steel. The working edges of the shovel are beveled or sharpened, the edges show no field wear whatsoever. There is no rust, only some slight reddening of the metal surface inside the socket for the handle. There are some superficial scratches to the shovel's finish from where this spade head contacted others during storage, but this is minor.Overall the spade is in mint, unissued, new old stock condition, would be hard to improve on.
