This is an authentic WWI British Memorial Plaque, commonly known as a "Dead Man's Penny, " issued by the British government to commemorate a serviceman who died as a result of the Great War. Each plaque was individually cast and sent to the next of kin. This example is named to PERCY SILVESTER, making it a fully identifiable and historically documented piece.
Private Percy Silvester Service Number: 3045 Regiment: London Regiment Unit. Date of Death: 26 September 1915 Age: 28. Private Silvester is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France, Panels 130-135. The Loos Memorial honors over 20,000 British soldiers who fell during the Battle of Loos and surrounding actions and who have no known grave. He was the son of George and Sarah Silvester, of 4 Canadian Avenue, Catford, London.
