As the war progressed, Germany's leather stockpiles dwindled. After extensive imports from South America, particularly Argentina, the German government began producing ersatz Pickelhauben made of other materials.
In 1915, some Pickelhauben began to be made from thin sheet steel. However, the German high command needed to produce an even greater number of helmets, leading to the usage of pressurized felt and even paper to construct Pickelhauben. This Pickelhaube is made from pressed thin sheet steel and has a glossy-black finish. It has a rolled edge finish. It has a slightly squared peak and neck protector. It has a metal spike at the crown. Early versions had a high crown, but the height gradually was reduced and the helmet became more fitted in form, in a continuing process of weight-reduction and cost-saving.
The crown has a circular plate with three domed split pins and one brass screw bolt to fix it to the helmet. It has two brass fixings, one either side for the chin strap to secured to.It has a WW1 steel Imperial German, other ranks Prussian Infantry Pickelhaube Helmet plate which is secured through three helmet plate loops on the inside. Inside the helmet it has a black leather headband. This is a very nice original, untouched example of a pressed steel infantryman's Pickelhaube helmet.
