Original Ww1 Prussian Officer's Pickelhaube Helmet & Chin Strap
This is a WW1 Original Prussian Officer's Pickelhaube Leather Helmet with Damaged Helmet Plate and complete with a Chin Strap. The early Russian type (known as "The Helmet of Yaroslav Mudry") was also used by cavalry, which had used the spike as a holder for a horsehair plume in full dress, a practice also followed with some Prussian models. This Pickelhaube is made from hardened (boiled) leather, which gives a glossy-black finish. It reinforced with brass trim (usually plated with gold or silver for officers) to the peak and has a brass spine down the outside from the crown to the bottom of the neck guard. The neck guard is stitched to the top.

It has a metal spike at the crown which can be screwed off. Early versions had a high crown, but the height gradually was reduced and the helmet became more fitted in form, in a continuing process of weight-reduction and cost-saving.

The crown has a circular plate with four stars fixed to it. The helmet is complete with a leather and brass chin strap , which has a brass buckle fastening.

The chin strap is secured either side of the helmet with round rosettes and brass split pins. It has a WW1 brass Imperial German, other ranks Prussian Infantry Pickelhaube Helmet plate which has damage to it, the eagles head and sceptre are missing (See the close up photograph). Inside the helmet it has a leather headband.

It is also stamped in white with "56", possible the helmet size. This is a very nice original, untouched example of an infantryman's Pickelhaube helmet.
