THE SITE OF THE BATTLE OF SAINT-MIHIEL / MEUSE RIVER-ARGONNE OFFENSIVE. TITLED IN THE NEGATIVE IN ENGLISH AT THE LOWER CENTER.
MIHIEL ON THE RIVER MEUSE MADE FAMOUS BY THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE 1918'. Was a major World War I battle fought from 12-15 September 1918, involving the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and 110,000 French troops under the command of General John J. Pershing of the United States against German positions. Army Air Service played a significant role in this action.
Was a major part of the final Allied offensive of World War I that stretched along the entire Western Front. It was fought from September 26, 1918, until the Armistice of November 11, 1918, a total of 47 days. It was was the largest in United States military history, involving 1.2 million American soldiers. It is also the deadliest battle in the history of the United States Army, resulting in over 350,000 casualties, including 28,000 German lives, 26,277 American lives and an unknown number of French lives. THIS PHOTO IS NOT IN THE VERY BEST CONDITION BUT IT SHOWS ITS HONEST AGE AND IS WHAT IT IS. RARELY DO THESE LARGE YARD LONG PHOTOS SURVIVE BECAUSE OF THEIR LENGTH. MAKING THEM ONE OF THE MOST DIFICULT WW1 PHOTOS TO FIND. AFTER A LITTLE TLC AND FRAMING THIS WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO ANY WW1 COLLECTION.. CONDITION IS VERY GOOD THROUGHOUT WITH THIN DAMP STAINING ALONG THE VERY BOTTOM MARGIN EDGE, SMALL 2" TEAR ON THE FRONT CENTER LEFT EDGE AND A 13" TEAR ON THE RIGHT CENTER, SOME TINY SPOTS PEPPERED HERE AN THERE, LOWER LEFT FRONT CORNER CHIP (1/4" x 1") (BARELY TOUCHING THE IMAGE), LIGHT CURLING FROM BEING ROLLED UP FOR OVER 103 YEARS. PLEASE EXCUSE THE ROUND DISKS USED AS WEIGHTS TO HOLD THE PHOTO IN POSITION WHILE TAKING THE PICTURES FOR THIS LISTING.ALSO THE LARGE SIZE OF THE PHOTO MADE IT DIFFICULT TO PRODUCE A DECENT SIZE COVER SHOT SINCE I NEEDED TO BE ABOUT 4 FEET AWAY TO GET THE ENTIRE PHOTO IN THE LISTING PICTURE. I TRIED TO MAKE UP FOR THIS SHORTFALL BY PROVIDING MULTIPLE CLOSEUPS OF SECTION BY SECTION.
