Original WWI German 1914 Iron Cross Patriotic Pendant - Kaiser Wilhelm II. Offered here is an original WWI-era Imperial German patriotic pendant in the form of the 1914 Iron Cross, featuring the Prussian royal crown, large central "W" cipher for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and 1914 date.
This is a privately manufactured patriotic jewelry or souvenir piece from the First World War period rather than an officially awarded Iron Cross decoration. The pendant is attractively executed with a raised outer border, finely textured/stippled fields, central circular medallion surrounding the Wilhelm II W, Prussian crown above and 1914 below. Patriotic Iron Cross jewelry was widely produced during the First World War in numerous forms including pendants, watch-fob charms, brooches, rings and other personal keepsakes. Collectors generally refer to this type as a Patriotischer Anhänger Eisernes Kreuz 1914.
1 1/8" × 1 1/8". Measured across the cross excluding the suspension loop. The pendant appears to be a silver-colored plated base-metal piece.
The reverse shows extensive loss of the original plating together with brown oxidation, suggesting a ferrous or similar base metal underneath. No silver hallmark or maker mark is visible in the photographs. The upper suspension eye remains intact. No ribbon, chain or secondary suspension ring is included.
Good original antique condition with honest age and use wear. The piece shows wear and loss of plating, mostly on the back, with some oxidation present on the reverse. General surface wear and rubbing. Plating loss to raised portions of the front.Heavier plating loss on the reverse. Dark brown oxidation and localized surface corrosion on the reverse.
Age-darkening around the borders and raised details. Intact crown, W cipher and 1914 date. No obvious broken cross arms visible.
The front displays considerably better than the reverse, retaining attractive contrast between the raised design and textured background. The aged finish has been left intact.
