Rare 1912 RPPC Postcard Soldiers Hannover Germany Prussia Pre-WWI Sergeant. This rare postcard features soldiers posing for a picture with the sergeant seated in the front. The back is in german, and, best I can conclude, reads Here sits the sergeant.
So, it seems to be a troop of soldiers with their leader. This is set in 1912, which is just two years before the onset of World War I, which was the war to end all wars, changing Europe forever. The very country this is set in particularly would change, as Prussia's borders changed dramatically, and the beginning of the end of Prussia occurred after the end of WWI. More specifically, this photo was taken in Hanover, which is in modern day Germany, the capital and largest city of the German state of Lower Saxony. Prussia was a German country located on the southeast coast of the Baltic Sea.
It formed the former German Empire when it united the German states and territories in 1871. It was de facto dissolved by an emergency decree transferring powers of the Prussian government to then German Chancellor Franz von Papen in the year 1932. Personally, I enjoy the facial expression of the soldier second from the left, who seems a bit surprised at the photo being taken - or perhaps the timing. He's also smoking, as evidence of the cigarette in his hand.
He couldn't be bothered to finish first before taking the picture. The soldier on the left side also is sporting an excellent mustache. It's fascinating to think about if any of these soldiers survived WWI just two years later, which saw 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded.
