This is a rare WWI Lafayette Escadrille engraved shell casing. This piece of trench art has "Escdrille Lafayette" engraved at the top, as well as "Verdun" engraved inside what looks like a horseshoe.
There are also flower and leaf decorations engraved on the casing. The casing is marked on the bottom. This is a one of a kind item and has been in my personal collection a long time. You never see items identified to this elite group and is the first I was able to find in many many years of collecting. It is awesome and the pictures don't do it justice. You'll never find another.
The Lafayette Escadrille was a famous French air force unit during World War I that was comprised of many Americans who volunteered for service overseas before the United States officially entered the war. The unit was later transferred to the U. Army and became the 103rd Aero Squadron. The famous movie " Fly Boys" honored this elite group of WW1 pilots.
