This is one of the rarest of German Imperial headdress accessories. The gray/green cloth is in very good condition, and nearly all of the stitching is intact, save a small hole at the front corner of the mortarboard, and another one along the side of the mortarboard.
One of the brass fastening hooks is missing on the bottom, and three of the six small brass closure hooks on the side of the cover have been replaced with black japanned steel hooks-- but this appears to be a period repair. The openings for the field badge and the cord toggle are fine. There are a number of faded markings on the interior, but I can only make out an inked 10.
