THIS IS A D TYPE BRITISH ISSUE CANTEEN (AND IT STILL WORKS FINE OVER A PARAFIN STOVE) - AMAZING TO THINK IT IS NOW WELL OVER 100 YEARS SINCE IT LEFT THE FACTORY. Soldiers on and behind the front line ate their meals out of a British Army issue mess tin. It was an essential part of every soldier's kit.

WW1 mess tins have a narrow metal loop, to secure the mess tin strap, at the centre front and back of the lower half of the tin, just below the lip at the top. Tins without these loops are postwar.
