You are viewing a rare WW1 1916 Imperial German Stahlhelm (German for -Steel Helmet) Sniper Brow Plate (or Stirnpanzer in German) known as the Brow Plate. This armor plate was meant to augment the M1916, M1917 or M1918 German helmets including the cut-out or Cavalry helmet and make it "Bulletproof" these were limited and were only used by snipers and trench raiding parties. The Brow Plate was fitted to the front of the helmet to provide additional protection to the wearer, and it was made from a Curved 5 mm cast steel, and it was suitable for all First World War German Metal helmet models.

The base is slightly flared and the sides have angular recesses that fit over the ventilator lugs at either temple. Below these are rectangular slots to which are attached the leather straps and buckle used to secure the plate to the helmet. The straps are missing on this example. Approximately 50,000 brow plates were manufactured. It weighed just over 2 kg (4.6 lb), and made the helmet impractically and too heavy for normal use, it could only be worn for short periods so it was seldom used.

The Imperial German Army went to war in 1914 wearing either the leather Pickelhaube helmet or the shako, but both forms of headdress proved inadequate to the demands of trench warfare. Due to the high number of head wounds experience in 1914-15, the German High Command authorized the development of a steel helmet.

In December 1915, military physician Friedrick Schwerd and professor August Bier of the Technical Institute of Hanover developed the prototype steel Stahlhelm, the finished design was introduced into regular service during the Verdun campaign in early 1916. Some experts recommend this test and consider that if it rings like a bell then it is an original. Reproductions and fakes will produce a dull sound and do not match the weight as they are generally made lighter. Took this to a foundry to reproduce It wouldn't be cheap. As It has no makers marks, it could possibly be an early vintage reproduction, as it is made from the right material "cast steel" and has forge and grind marks and it is the right weight, shape, but it will be yours to decide.
