A very unique & rare WW1 British Steel helmet with original camouflage paint. It has the original period factory paint inside & on the outside is a camouflage pattern similar to that commonly used by the German troops. This could have been applied by British troops as very rarely they were known to have painted their helmets this way. (There was an original photo on the net recently of a group of British troops in a trench with such cammo' on their helmets).
It could however also have perhaps been used by an American soldier as they favored painting their helmets with camouflage. Stamped on the underside rim is H. S 435, standing for Hadfield Ltd of Sheffield (steel suppliers). There are three shallow (slight) line-dents to the top of the shell, (please see pics). The liner is in fine condition & has the standard red Brodie stamping on the inside.
The felt oval cushion to the crown has no rubber'doughnut' underneath making this the early pattern. There looks to be very slight mothing to the felt.
The size stamp to the leather liner strap is "7". The chinstrap is all good & strong however does have a small repair at one end, again, please see pics. A rare example of a British helmet.
