The German army introduced the steel helmet in the year 1916 after the spike helmet shows little protection to the troops. Certain troops were told to paint their feldgreu helmets in colours to blend into the surrounding of the war zone. The blocks of colours are separated by half inch thick black lines. The helmet retains 70% of the hand painted paint. There is no liner for the helmet and the chinstrap lugs have been removed. The split pins are present but they are replacements.
