WW1 GERMAN ENLISTED MANS SPIKE HELMET PRUSSIAN PICKELHAUBE IN WARTIME GRAY PEWTER 1915. For collectors of authentic wartime line pieces, this used helmet shows moderate wear and is a perfect display item.
The helmet is marked size 55. The Government (armory) issue stamp is too weak to be readable. The polished black leather body, curved visor and neck piece have minimal age related surface irregularities. Or impressions of brown cloth/canvas-like substance used as covering camouflage for the polished helmet can be observed behind the National Reichs cockade. All stitching is correct and complete with no loose ends or irregularities. Helmet shape is considered most acceptable.
The Helmkokarden are most likely replacements. The dark brown leather strap has steel M-91 hangers and buckles with just a whisper of rust. The spike is mounted on a M-15 bayonet lug. The Wappen is a non-perforated Kingdom of Prussia "Line Eagle".All metallic furniture and trim is of wartime field gray "pewter" consisting of 80%-90% tin. No rust is evident on helmet furniture.
All eight fingers of the original soft tan liner are present. There is no top draw string. Portions of the liner are undergoing flaking and deterioration, especially in the rear neck area (refer to images). However, for a 100+ year item, with proper care it should last another 100 years.
The stand does not come with the helmet. Except for the replacement parts mentioned above, this is a wholly authentic Great War line item of German origin. The last pickelhaube variant before the introduction of the steel trench helmet (Stahlhelm) in January 1916 worn by shock troops (Stosstruppen) at Verdun, France. This is a prime display example. The item "WW1 GERMAN EM SPIKE HELMET PRUSS. PICKELHAUBE IN GRAY PEWTER 1915" is in sale since Monday, March 16, 2020.
