The shell's size is stamped on the band. There are also two other markings. The first one is an acceptance stamp, i. A XIII which stands for Bekleidungs-Amt (Clothing store) 13th Army Corps, Wurttemburg area with its HQ at Stuttgart. The second one is the L. All these stamps are identical to the ones from the original liners. These liners are made from the correct grades of leather and are stitch-per-stitch identical to originals. Each of the three pads has a pocket sewn into the rear to accommodate stuffing for padding/sizing. The liner pads are machine sewn natural cotton and stuffed with horsehair or flax tow as originals. Stitch-per-stitch the same as the WW1 ones. The liner band does not have two rivet holes since not all rivet holes on the M16 helmet were at the exact same location. The seam of the liner goes on the back of the helmet and then you can make the holes for the liner where the holes on your helmet are. The holes for the rivets should be made in the exact center of the band for the best fit. Leather color may vary due to different supply. Real heavy duty leather chinstrap. Complete with two buckles fitted on the strap and pickelhaube hangers which will give a precise fit to original M91 mounts found on all M16 shells. The hardware has been stamped from steel alloy with specially made dies. It is not "laser" cut. The strap is high quality leather which is tanned exactly as originals to get the proper texture and is die-cut for correct sharp edges. The leather strap is appox. The ends are hand stitched as the originals were. Exact copies made from the correct steel alloy, the prongs are soldered to the heads.Set of three, includes the thick headed one for the rear. Stahlhelm is German for "steel helmet".
The Imperial German Army began to replace the traditional boiled-leather Pickelhaube (spiked combat helmet) with the Stahlhelm during World War I. The design of the Stahlhelm was carried out by Dr. Friedrich Schwerd from the Technical Institute of Hannover.
In early 1915, Schwerd carried out a study of head wounds suffered during trench warfare and submitted a recommendation for steel helmets. The Stahlhelm was introduced into regular service during the Verdun campaign in early 1916, hence it is most usually referred to as the "Model 1916".
The complete M-16 weighed two pounds and six ounces. Helmets were referred to as "shells" when they were empty of any liners and straps. The M-16 shell was manufactured in six sizes: 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, and 70.And it was made of molybdenum steel. The German M-16 helmets of WW1 era were painted with a matte finish "field green" lacquer. The inscription was on the left side of the skirt. There were eight factories involved in the manufacturing, therefore, eight different code letters were represented in all.
