How about this for a real barn find! During the Normandy celebrations last Summer we stayed at a B & B Farmhouse inland from the beaches. The Farmer took us into one of the barns and up a ladder we went to the loft area, where the walls were covered in graffiti, names and drawings etc from Soldiers of both Wars. He then took us to an outhouse where I immediately noticed a P O 8 Side pack full of clothes pegs hanging on the door, then came two M16 Semi relic German Steel helmets on a shelf and two French waterbottles, WW1 & II.. Looking around I saw a large roll of German WW1 barbed Wire and a pile of leather boot remains... These were both German and British boots and all semi relic. One of the M16s and the French waterbottles are listed at present.. Having been informed it was bought back by the Farmers grandfather and it wasnt for sale, it took until the day we were leaving to prize it from him! Basically its a 1915 German Erzatz picklehaube.

It has lost its plate although these are fairly easy to find. Part of the liner is missing and it has a broken chinstrap with buckles and fittings plus on cockade still present. Left completely as we bought it although it would clean up if required. Warm soapy water would bring the skull black again and with a brush most of the dust etc could be taken out.

The barn was dry so nothing actually rotted but having been in there for around 97 years I thought it wasnt to bad with the stitching still being good etc. The original owners name is on the lower rear peak. The two plate holes are present and a replacement plate would be easy to find if required.. A real semi relic from the Great War and being a grey fitted Erzatz 1915 issue the helmet is 100 years old exactly. Rare to find such items left as they were and untouched after so long. Personally I really like items like this as they are full of character and are 100% WW1....
