A great GvR MM Territorial Long Service Medal to Malvern man, Pte R J Washington, Worcestershire Regiment. An interesting Worcestershire Regiment group of five. Medals all correctly named as follows. GvR MM - 17239 PTE.

1914/15 Star Trio - 17239 PTE. GvR TEM - 5244161 SGT. Medal Index Card shows that Richard J Washington landed in France on 27/5/1915 and later served with the Wiltshire Regiment (47760). His Territorial Efficiency Medal is confirmed as awarded in February 1931, and issued in June 1931.

Also a newspaper report from the Malvern Gazette, published 25/5/1917. Pte R J Washington of Malvern has been awarded the MM for services on 23/4/1917. On this occasion, Pte Washington, who had been previously recommended, went out under heavy machine gun fire and rescued several men, including an officer of the Royal Engineers.

Pte Washington is well remembered in local football and friendly society circles. Washington's Military Medal was awarded during the 1st Queens and 16th Kings Royal Rifles attack on part of the Hindenburg Line in the valley of the the River Sensee. This attack which took place on the 23rd April was unsuccessful that day, the 2nd Worcestershire remained in support all day and were not called upon to enter the action, but clearly sent men forward to assist in the evacuation of the wounded. The Worcesters' Regimental History records that: Very few of the 1st Queens came back: over 400 had falled; and the Rifles had suffered almost as heavily.

However during the following day it transpired that German forces had withdrawn from their Hindenburg trenches during the night, withdrawing to the eastern bank of the Sensee river. In 1928 he was the Provincial Grand Primo of the Worcestershire Provincial Grand Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.

He died in Worcester, at the age of 47 in 1930 (thus never seeing his issued Territorial Efficiency Medal). A great Medals in GVF/NEF condition.
