WW1 US Army Air Service WING / FUSELAGE FABRIC Curtiss Martin Boeing RARE
Circa 1917 (before switching to the standard roundel), it is from either the upper wing or fuselage, and was cut from the aircraft by a US veteran during the war. This type of fabric covered the entire tubular structure of teh aircraft, including the flaps, ailerons, and rudder! Made of lightweight fabric, these section is EASILY the best piece of WW1 US Army Air Service Fabric memorabilia I have ever owned. Though it does feature some cracks, it is in AMAZING condition, and retains 95% of it's original paint! All colors are VERY BRIGHT, and feature the typical early 1917 "red, white and blue" American Star.
Some folds and cracks due to the age of the fabric. Due to the fragility of the piece, it was mounted onto a cardboard backing and framed, but I suspect someone can remove that if they wished. Framed, it measures in at 31 in height and width. The paper label at the bottom indicates. Insignia, made of airplane fabric cover, cut from a World War 1 American Biplane, in the shape of a star.
Brought back home by Alfred F. Schlembach, aerial gunnery instructor with the 87th Aero Squadron. Original early fabric of this size is EXTREMELY rare as it usually burned up or rotted away over time. A one-of-a-kind item which would make an FANTASTIC addition to any collection or display!Most of my items are vintage, and as such are AS-IS, so you must therefore expect a degree of wear due to age and/or usage.
