WW1 US Marine Helmet with EGA

WW1 US Marine helmet with ega. The chin strap that has some cracking due to age but is complete and the helmet is in very good condition. I have had a number of questions about the ega attachment... Is it drilled or punched?

Here is a photo also of the back of the device. It looks like someone has taken it off at some point as there are old scratches. I really don't like messing with historic items and don't want to take it off to check. I have since bought several WW1 Marine helmets with painted insignias and I like them better.
