This is a truly historic collection that remains in a very seldom seen state of amazing preservation. The grouping is very well documented with significant research and is beyond museum quality. It is without a doubt for the most discerning and meticulous advanced collector. WWI US M1917 Second Army Wool Tunic - EXCELLENT CONDITION. This Tunic remains in an Outstanding State of Preservation and shows virtually NO sign of ever being worn in service.
There is NO Soiling, NO Staining, NO Fading and NO Mothing. All stitching and material to every aspect of the tunic remains in Excellent, Near New Condition. The Second Army Shoulder Insignia / Patch Remains Excellent and Firmly Stitched to the Tunic as do the Honorable Discharge Chevron and Single Gold Overseas Service Chevron. The Corporal's Chevrons to the Right Sleeve also remain in Excellent Condition and Firmly Applied.The "USNA" (US National Army) and Infantry Crossed Rifles Collar Discs also Remain in Excellent Condition with their original round fasteners to the rear. The Left Chest Maintains its Original WWI Victory Ribbon with Single Star, Both in Excellent Condition. The Tunic Maintains all of its original buttons and collar clips in excellent condition and remaining firmly attached by their original thread. The INTERIOR of the Tunic also remains in Excellent Condition with NO readily apparent signs of age, wear or use. The SIZE TAG REMAINS IN THE COLLAR and Lists the Tunic as a SIZE 42 "BREAST" REGULAR.
As stated, the Tunic is an Extra Large Size. The MEASUREMENTS ARE: CHEST = 20 1/2 to 21 Inches Measured From Armpit to Armpit Across the Chest when Buttoned and Laying Flat; BACK = 17 1/4 Inches From Shoulder Seam to Shoulder Seam, Measured Across the Upper Back, Just Below the Collar; SLEEVES = 25 Inches Measured from Top Shoulder Seam to Cuff. WWI US Army Issue Enlisted Man's Insignia Applied Three Button Shirt - EXCELLENT CONDITION.
This shirt, like the tunic shows virtually no signs of age, wear or use. There is NO Mothing, Soiling or Staining and it remains in an outstanding state of preservation. All buttons remain present to the collar & chest area as well as to the cuffs. All material and stitching remain very solid and undamaged as well.
The Second Army, Honorable Discharge and Overseas Service Chevron all Remain in Excellent Condition and Firmly Attached to the left sleeve by their original thread. The Right Sleeve bears a set of embroidered wool corporal's chevrons, also in excellent condition and remaining firmly attached. The Collar Bears a Set of "US" Crossed Rifles Infantry Insignia to each side that are Pin Backed and also in Excellent Condition. The Left Chest bears an Original WWI Victor Ribbon with Single Star that also remains in Excellent Condition. The Contract / NY QMD Tag Remains Firmly Stitched to the interior of the shirt at the tail / skirt and lists the maker as "Roggen Brothers" with a Contract Date of 30 SEPTEMBER 1918.The QMD Tag shows wear but remains clearly legible. The shirt, like the other uniform items is also a very large size. This Coat shows absolutely NO Signs of Ever Being Worn and Looks at though it were Made Yesterday! It is pristine and we can find absolutely NO FLAWS to it anywhere. Corporal Gray's NAME Appears in His Handwriting in WWI Purple Laundry Pencil as. In LARGE Letters to the Wearer's Right Side of the Interior Collar. The writing shows no apparent fading and remains very bold and very clear. The Interior of the coat remains like new and the Contract / QMD Tag Remains in Excellent Condition and Firmly Stitched to the REAR of the Liner. The tag give the maker as "Jacob David Sons & Company, New York" with a Contract Date of 26 OCTOBER 1917. This is the 1917 PATTERN Overcoat with the Buttoned Straps to the Cuffs. The Coat is a VERY LARGE SIZE. The MEASUREMENTS ARE: CHEST = 25 1/2 Inches Measured from Armpit to Armpit Across the Chest when Buttoned and Laying Flat; BACK = 21 Inches Measured from Shoulder Seam to Shoulder Seam Across the Upper Back, Just Below the Collar; SLEEVES = 26 Inches Measured From Top Shoulder Seam to. WWI US M1912 Wool Breeches - EXCELLENT CONDITION. These breeches / trousers would rate a Mint Condition, but there are Two moth nips to the back or the right knee that are slightly larger than a pencil lead.Other than these two very small moth holes, the breeches are mint in every way, INSIDE and OUT! The Quartermaster Depot Tag to the rear of the interior, LEFT front pocket is MINT and is the best contract tag we have ever seen!

" The Maker is listed and "Milton Simpson & Company, New York with a Contract Date of 10 MAY 1919.The OVERALL LENGTH of the Breeches is 39 1/2 Inches, Measured from the Top of the Waistband to the Cuff, Down the Side Seam. WWI German Model 1916 Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) With Leather Chinstrap - GOOD CONDITION.
The helmet shows signs of age, wear and use. There are NO Dings, No Dents, No Corrosion and No Battle Damage to the helmet. The Helmet Maintains Approximately 40 to 50% of its Original Gray - Green Paint / Finish which shows wear to the crown and edges with minor rust visible in scattered areas throughout, mostly around the underside of the skirt or flared area.It has aged to a BEAUTIFUL Patina. The MARKINGS to the Underside of the Helmet near the wearer's ear Remain Clearly Visible and Appear As. The Helmet Maintains ALL of its Original Rivets but there is NO Liner or Liner Band. The interior of the helmet maintains approximately 40 to 50% of its original paint as well. The LEATHER CHINSTRAP Remains in GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION with the leather remaining VERY soft, supple and flexible.
All stitching to the chinstrap remains very solid and unbroken. It appears as though it may be the Chinstrap from a Pickelhaube as the metal fittings are Brass and Clearly Marked. The brass hardware shows age, wear and use, but remains very solid with no cracks or structural damage of any sort. Very solid chinstrap in every way that is NOT brittle or fragile. If handled correctly and cared for will remain in great condition for many years to come.WWI US Model 1917 Helmet with Liner - VERY GOOD CONDITION. The Helmet Shell Shows NO Dings, Dents, Rust or Corrosion and Maintains Approximately 80% of its original paint and sawdust finish. It has aged to a very attractive medium olive drab finish. The Heat Lot Markings remain Clearly Visible to the Underside of the Rim, Near the Weld Seam and Read, ZC179. The LINER Remains in VERY GOOD Condition and Remains Very Firmly Attached to the Helmet.
It is NOT loose or in any danger of separating from the helmet. EVERY aspect of the helmet liner remains very solid and in very nice, seldom seen, well above average condition. The MAKER'S STAMP with DATE Is Clearly Visible to the REAR of the Oil Cloth and Reads. WWI US M1910 Haversack with M1910 Meat Can Pouch & Transitional M1910 Carrier Pack - MINT CONDITION. It looks as thought it was manufactured, then immediately stored away under the most ideal conditions for preservation.The Carrier to the Rear is NOT the Earliest Version of the M1910 that Had the Leather Attaching Strap and "Ears, " but is a Transitional Version to the Second Model M1910. This Carrier does Not have the "ears, " but like the earlier version DOES have the leather attaching strap.
ALL in excellent, unissued condition! Every aspect of this haversack and its attachments are unblemished and undamaged. There is NO apparent soiling, staining or fading and it maintains an Excellent, Dark Khaki Color. " with a Manufacture Date of "JULY 1918.
NAMED: WWI US Corrected English Mask (CEM) Gas Mask with NAMED Carrier / Bag - FAIR CONDITION MASK - GOOD CONDITION CARRIER. This Gas Mask Satchel / Bag / Carrier is NAMED To Corporal Herbert Henry Gray and Bears His SERVICE NUMBER As Well. The Handwritten Name and Service Number Appear to the Rear of the Bag and Show Considerable Wear and Fading, But REMAIN VISIBLE with the Naked Eye. The Bag shows age, wear, use, soling and staining but remains very solid.
There is visible wear in spots, but no rust, damage or corrosion to any of the metal portions. The snaps remain very solid and function as intended. There are marking visible to the underside of the flap, but they have faded as well. The Gas Mask Is the Corrected English Mask or "CEM" and Consists of the YELLOW Type "H" Filter Canister. The Mask and Hose are VERY DRY and APPEAR UNDAMAGED and UNBROKEN. The Flapper Valve Guard and Flapper Valve Remain in Place and the Lenses are Undamaged and Only Lightly Tented. The metal canister appears to be in very good condition with no visible rust or damage. The Instruction, Record and Repair Envelope remains in place with its contents, but no information. We HAVE NOT Removed the Gas Mask or Canister from the Bag / Carrier Due to the Mask and Hose Being Very DRY.We are NOT going to chance breaking, cracking or tearing anything. We are NOT Going to Remove it from the Bag and will leave the choice up to you as to whether you wish to remove it or not. WWI US Army Issue Wool Blanket - VERY GOOD CONDITION. We opened this blanket completely up, laid it out and looked it over.
It remains in very nice condition and is in very good, very solid state of preservation. There are NO readily apparent stains or soiling and it maintains very good color with no apparent fading or streaking.
There is some minor mothing scattered to the edges, but none that detracts from the appearance. There is NO mothing to the folds or any readily visible to the inner portion or main body of the blanket. It is NOT fragile, worn, frayed or thin. There is ONE small "L" shaped repair that is very hard to see and measures approximately two inches by two inches. WWI US M1910 Campaign Hat - FAIR CONDITION.
This is the LARGEST WWI Campaign Hat that we have ever seen! By OUR Measurements, it is a SIZE 7 3/8. The hat shows definite signs of age, wear, use, neglect and long term storage.The FELT BODY of the Hat Remains in GOOD, SOLID CONDITION. There is NO readily apparent soiling, staining, fading or mothing to the felt hat itself. It is dusty, a bit warped and misshapen from long term storage. The leather sweatband is completely gone, the chinstrap is completely gone and only a small portion of the exterior hat band remains.
We do not know if these can be restored, but this hat would definitely be a good candidate for restoration. Once it is brushed and steamed, it will display quite well, even just as it is. WWI NAME, Service Number, Address & Unit Marked Denim Garment Bag - FAIR to GOOD CONDITION. This blue denim, draw rope garment bag shows age, wear and use but remains VERY solid. There are numerous war time patches with scattered spots of soiling and staining, but it maintains a very nice deep blue color.
The heavy original rope remains in place and is unbroken. The Bag Bears a LARGE, Stitched On, Cloth Tag with ALL of Corporal Herbert Gray's Handwritten Information in HIS OWN Handwriting! The Information ALL REMAINS CLEARLY Visible, Bold and Easy to Read. It is LARGE and really stands out. It is PERFECT for display with the grouping because it is so bold and eye catching.
There is also a smaller cloth information tag with the same handwritten information to the bag, but it has faded much more than the large tag that you see in the photos above. This is an outstanding piece and really adds to the collection.
Personal items bag with a number of pouches and slots for soap, brushes, razors and other personal items. No damage or readily apparent blemishes and maintains very good color. WWI British Made Wool "Overseas" Cap - VERY GOOD CONDITION.
Typical British Made Enlisted Man's Overseas cap with cotton liner and sweatband. Bears the British Arrow Marking to the sweatband with no other visible stamps or information. NO visible mothing, soiling or staining to the exterior, but does show signs of age, wear and use. Nothing detractive at all, remains very solid and displays well. WWI Mis-Matched Set of Puttees - VERY GOOD CONDITION.
One British Issue Puttee that maintains its original Maker's Tag firmly stitched and one US issue puttee with no tag but is labeled "LEFT" is period laundry pencil. Both remain very solid with tie strings in place. Some signs of age, wear and use but no readily apparent soiling, heavy staining, fraying or fading. TEN Pages of Recent Research. This recently conducted, modern research is an EXCEPTIONAL source of information that documents this grouping and Corporal Gray's life VERY well.No other information is needed to document the grouping or Corporal Gray's service, unless you so choose to pin point some exact details and/or specifics. His Pennsylvania Veteran's Compensation Document Clearly States that He Saw COMBAT During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and was Approved for Pension / Compensation.
