The information we received with this helmet and tunic is that they were BOTH from the same soldier, but the information regarding this person had been separated from the uniform by the original collector's family.

Both the Shoulder Insignia / Patch to the tunic and the Hand Painted Insignia to the Helmet are that of the U. Second Division, Seventeenth Field Artillery, Second A mmunition Train. The Tunic Remains in EXCELLENT CONDITION with the LARGE "Indian Head" Shoulder Insignia remaining in NEAR PERFECT / MINT CONDITION. The Helmet Remains in GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION and is COMPLETE with a Nice, Solid Liner and Pliable Unbroken Chinstrap.

The helmet shows age, wear and some neglect to the shell, but remains extremely solid and displays very well. WWI US Model 1917 Wool Tunic - EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Tunic shows only very minor signs of age, wear and use. There is NO Soiling, Staining or Fading and it Maintains Near Perfect Color.

It remains VERY solid and there is no damage to any stitching. There are a few scattered areas of mothing, but none detracts from the display and appearance of the tunic. There are Two Moth Holes to the Upper Right Shoulder that are smaller that a pencil eraser and visible in the photos above. There is also a moth nip to the right chest pocket that is approximately the size of a pencil point and two moth holes to the right of the lower left pocket. These two are also smaller than a pencil eraser and in a semicircular pattern.

ALL Buttons remain in excellent condition and firmly atta ch ed b y what appears to be their original thread. The collar clips are also in excellent condition and remain firmly attached. To the LEFT Shoulder the Tunic Maintains its Original Second Division, 17th Field Artillery, Second Ammunition Train Shoulder Insignia / Patch.

The SSI Consists of a LARGE, Bright Grass Green Artillery Shell with an Applied Linen Star with Very Detailed and Colorful Indian Chief's Head to the Center. The SSI Remains in NEAR PERFECT Condition and is as firmly attached to the tunic as the day it was sewn on! All original thread remains in tact with NO loose or damaged stitching. Also to the left sleeve, the tunic maintains its Red Honorable Discharge Chevron in Very Good Condition and TWO Gold Overseas Service Chevrons in Excellent Condition. All chevrons also remain firmly attached. To the Right Sleeve the Tunic Maintains its Original Cook's Embroidered Wool Insignia in Excellent Condition and remaining firmly attached. The Collar Maint ai ns its Original "US" and Artillery Crossed Cannons Collar Discs in Excellent Condition and maintaining the ir original round nuts to the screw posts. The Interior Liner Remains in Very Good to Excellent Condition with NO soiling, staining or fading but there are several scattered very small areas of wear to the center of the upper back that are rather hard to see.

To the Interior Collar the "coat" maintains its ORIGINAL SIZE TAG that Lists the Coat as a "40" Breast. The Quartermaster Depot Tag Remains Firmly Attached to the Rear of the Liner and gives a Contract Date of 27 March 1918 and also Lists the Chest or "Breast" Size as 40.

The Tunic is a Very Nice, Larger than Average Size. The MEASUREMENTS ARE: CHEST = 20 1/2 Inches Measured from Armpit to Armpit Across the Front when Buttoned and Laying Flat; SLEEVES = 24 3/4 Inches Measured from Top Shoulder Seam to Cuff; BACK = 17 1/2 Inches Measured from Shoulder Seam to Shoulder Seam Across the Upper Back, Just Below the Collar. WWI US Model 1917 Helmet - GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION.

This helmet is COMPLETE with its original liner and unbroken chinstrap. It remains very solid and displays very well.

The helmet does show age, wear and use as well as scattered light rust to the shell. None of the rust comes close to penetrating the steel or damages the integrity of the helmet. The rust is dark and does not appear to be active and does NOT flake.

The helmet maintains approximately 50% of its original texture and finish and has aged to a n attractive Dark Olive Patina. There No Dings or Dents or other sort of damage to the shell. The heat stamp / lot number remains visible to the underside of the rim at the seam and reads ZF 44. The Helmet Maintains Approximately 80 to 85 % of its Hand Painted Second Division, 17th Field Artillery, 2nd Ammunition Train Insignia in VERY GOOD Condition. The Insignia is VERY WELL DONE and Painted with GREAT Color and Detail!

The Soldier who Painted this Had Some Artistic Talent, Took His Time and Did a Great Job! The Insignia Remains Very BOLD with Very Good Color that is Very Easy to See and Distinguish. The details remain quite vivid and the color shows only minimal to light fading an d age. The Helmet has NOT BEEN LACQUERED or SHELLACKED and remains in its original state. It i s a very nice, clean example. The Liner shows age, wear and use with some very minor damage to a few small areas where the oil cloth meets the leather. The oil cloth portion is worn but is not torn, split, ripped or thin.

It remains flexible and can easily be folded down without damaging it. There is NO makers stamp or inspection mark visible behind the oil cloth. The Felt Crown Pad remains in Very Good Condi ti on with no readily apparent damage or mothing. The cotton portions of the liner such as the netting and adjuster string show considerable age and wear with a few broken strands to the netting. The Leather Rim Shows age, wear , use and is a bit misshapen but shows NO rot or damage otherwise.

The liner remains quite firmly in the helmet and is not falling out, loose or separated. The Chinstrap remains UNBROKEN and Complete. It does show age and wear with some cracking that is visible in the photos, b ut it Remains Soft, Flexible and Easily Pliable. There is NO dusty red rot or hard or overly dry spots to the chinstrap.

There is a Small Split to the chinstrap just inside the helmet above one the the chinstrap loops that is Very Hard to see and only visible under close inspection. The portions of the chinstrap to the interior crown of the helmet are a bit dry but remain unbroken and undamaged. All metal portions such as the buckle and connecting loops remain in very good, very solid condition and show not damage , only a very small amount of light surface rust to the buckle. This is overall a very nice, complete chinstrap that if handled properly and with care, should remain in the helmet for many years to come.

T his is a BEAUTIFUL, all original set that in our opinion is quite easil y MUSEUM QUALITY and could fit into the holdings of an Advanced Collector. The picture s do not do this tunic and helmet justice. It is VERY Impressive in its condition, rarity, detail and quality. As dealers and collectors, we all know that it is nearly impossible to find TRUE, Authentic and Unaltered sets such as this from any unit within the Second Division.
